What a Krugerrand is worth — how much gold it contains, why it is 22 karat, the fractional sizes, the silver Krugerrand, and how value tracks the live gold price.
What Determines a Krugerrand’s Value
The Krugerrand is a South African gold bullion coin first struck in 1967 by the South African Mint and Rand Refinery. It was the world’s first modern bullion coin made for private investors and remains one of the most recognized and widely traded gold coins on earth. For the standard bullion Krugerrand, value is driven almost entirely by its gold content and the live gold price, plus a small premium.
Because Krugerrands are so recognizable and liquid, they are easy to buy and sell worldwide. Older coins, proof Krugerrands, and certain key dates can carry an additional numismatic premium, but the typical 1 oz bullion Krugerrand is valued at its melt value plus a modest markup.
How Much Gold Is in a Krugerrand
A 1 oz Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold. That is the key fact: even though the coin is 22 karat rather than 24 karat, it still holds a full ounce of gold. The copper alloy is added on top of the gold, so the coin weighs about 33.93 grams in total — heavier than a pure one-ounce coin.
This means a 1 oz Krugerrand’s gold value tracks the live gold spot price for one ounce. To estimate its melt value at any moment, look at the current price of one troy ounce of gold; the coin’s worth is that figure plus a small premium for the recognized bullion product.
Why a Krugerrand Is 22 Karat (Not 24K)
Krugerrands are struck in 22 karat gold — 91.67% pure gold alloyed with copper. The copper gives the coin its slightly reddish-orange tone and makes it far more durable and scratch-resistant than a soft 24 karat coin, which mattered when the coin was designed to actually circulate as a bullion holding.
Importantly, the 22 karat purity does not reduce the amount of gold: a 1 oz Krugerrand still contains a full ounce of pure gold, with the copper added as extra weight. The obverse features Paul Kruger and the reverse the springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa.
Krugerrand Sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz & 1/10 oz
The original Krugerrand was a 1 oz coin. In 1980 the South African Mint added fractional sizes: the 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz Krugerrand, each containing that fraction of a troy ounce of pure gold. The fractional coins are popular with buyers who want smaller, more affordable gold pieces.
When estimating value, match the coin to its size: a 1/2 oz Krugerrand’s gold value is half the one-ounce gold price, a 1/4 oz is a quarter, and so on, each plus a premium. Fractional coins usually carry a slightly higher premium per ounce of gold than the full one-ounce coin.
What About the Silver Krugerrand?
In 2017, on the coin’s 50th anniversary, South Africa introduced a silver Krugerrand: a 1 oz coin struck in .999 fine silver rather than gold. It carries the same Paul Kruger and springbok designs but is a silver bullion coin, so its value tracks the silver price, not the gold price.
If you have a Krugerrand, check whether it is gold or silver before estimating value — the two are very different in price. A gold Krugerrand is valued from the gold market; a silver Krugerrand is valued from the silver market plus a collectible premium.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Krugerrand worth?+
A standard 1 oz gold Krugerrand is worth its gold content plus a small premium. Since it contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold, its melt value tracks the live price of one ounce of gold. Proof and certain older coins can carry an additional collector premium.
