Lab-Grown and Natural Diamonds: The Direct Answer

Lab-grown and natural diamonds are both, chemically and physically, real diamond: crystallized carbon with the same hardness, brilliance, and fire. The only fundamental difference between them is where and how that carbon crystallized — deep within the earth over enormous spans of time for a natural diamond, or inside a controlled laboratory process over a period of weeks for a lab-grown one. Neither is a fake, an imitation, or a "diamond substitute" in the way that moissanite or cubic zirconia are; those are entirely different minerals that merely resemble diamond, and this guide is not about them.

The real differences that matter to a buyer are not about authenticity but about origin, rarity, grading conventions, and resale expectations — each covered in its own section below. How Natural Diamonds Form

Natural diamonds form roughly 90 to 120 miles beneath the earth's surface, where extreme heat and pressure cause carbon atoms to crystallize into a diamond's distinctive structure over a period estimated at one billion to more than three billion years for most known natural diamonds. They are ultimately delivered to the surface by deep volcanic eruptions, through geological formations known as kimberlite pipes, which is why diamond mines are concentrated in specific volcanic regions around the world.

Because this process depends on a specific combination of depth, pressure, temperature, and a rare type of volcanic activity, natural diamond formation is not something that happens continuously or everywhere — it is a genuinely rare geological event, which is the foundation of natural diamonds' scarcity.

How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Made

Lab-grown diamonds are produced using one of two established methods that recreate the conditions of natural diamond formation on an industrial timescale. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) growth subjects a small diamond seed to extreme pressure and heat inside specialized equipment, closely mimicking the earth's natural process but compressed into weeks rather than eons.

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) takes a different approach, placing a diamond seed in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gas that is heated until the carbon atoms bond to the seed layer by layer, gradually building up a larger crystal. Both methods produce genuine crystalline diamond with the same atomic structure as a natural stone; they simply arrive at that structure through a controlled, human-directed process rather than a geological one.

Can You Tell Them Apart by Looking?

No — not with the naked eye, and generally not with a standard jeweler's loupe either. Lab-grown and natural diamonds share the same optical properties (refractive index, dispersion, and hardness), so they sparkle, refract light, and scratch-test identically to a casual or even a fairly experienced observer.

Distinguishing between the two reliably requires specialized equipment, such as spectroscopic screening devices that can detect subtle growth-related characteristics invisible without that instrumentation. A report from a recognized laboratory is strong documentation of origin, but a qualified gemologist or laboratory using appropriate screening equipment can also reach a reliable identification.

How Lab-Grown Diamond Reports Differ

Laboratories evaluate the same underlying quality characteristics — cut, color, clarity, and carat weight — but they do not all report lab-grown diamonds the same way. IGI continues to issue detailed 4Cs grades for natural and lab-grown diamonds. Since October 2025, GIA has used a separate Premium or Standard quality assessment for eligible colorless-to-near-colorless lab-grown diamonds rather than the natural-diamond D-to-Z and clarity nomenclature.

A lab-grown diamond report should explicitly disclose the stone's laboratory-grown origin. GIA-inspected lab-grown stones receive a matching girdle inscription, and many other laboratory-reported stones are inscribed as well. Read the report itself instead of assuming that every laboratory uses the same terms or thresholds.

A grading report is the right way to confirm which type of diamond you are looking at, and it should always be requested directly rather than assumed from a listing description or a seller's claim. This applies equally to both categories: a natural diamond claim deserves the same documentation standard as a lab-grown one.

Rarity, Value, and Resale: Where They Really Differ

The most consequential practical difference between the two categories is supply. Natural diamond supply is fixed by geology and mining output, while lab-grown diamond supply can scale with manufacturing capacity, and production has expanded substantially in recent years. That structural difference in supply is the primary reason lab-grown diamonds carry meaningfully lower pricing per carat than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality, and why that pricing gap has continued to widen rather than close as production scales further.

Resale dynamics differ for the same underlying reason. Natural diamonds have an established secondary market built over generations, with pricing patterns that are relatively well understood by dealers and appraisers. Lab-grown diamonds are newer to that secondary market, and because ongoing manufacturing improvements and expanding supply continue to push new-stone pricing down, resale value on lab-grown diamonds has generally tracked lower — sometimes considerably lower — relative to original purchase price than has historically been typical for natural diamonds.

Neither of these facts makes one category more or less "real" or desirable — they simply reflect how a manufactured, scalable good behaves differently in a resale market than a naturally scarce one, and they are worth factoring into a purchase decision, especially if resale value or long-term appreciation is a priority for you.

Some buyers also weigh sourcing and environmental considerations differently between the two categories; both natural and lab-grown diamonds have their own supply-chain and environmental profiles, and reasonable people land in different places on that question. Whichever direction you lean, the practical steps are the same: ask directly which category a stone falls into, request a grading report from a recognized lab that discloses that origin, and make sure the answer is documented rather than assumed.
