    Description

The 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar, certified MS65 by PCGS, is a Gem Uncirculated example of one of the most beloved series in American numismatics. Struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1885, this coin carries the distinctive "O" mint mark on its reverse, just below the eagle. The obverse presents George T. Morgan's celebrated portrait of Liberty — her hair adorned with a wheat and cotton wreath and a coronet inscribed LIBERTY — surrounded by thirteen stars and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with wings spread wide, grasping an olive branch and arrows, framed by laurel sprays and the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ONE DOLLAR, with IN GOD WE TRUST arching above. At the MS65 Gem Uncirculated level, this New Orleans issue exhibits exceptional surface quality with strong cartwheel luster and sharply struck design elements. The coin is securely housed in a PCGS tamper-evident holder complete with barcode and holographic security label, PCGS certification number 7822232, making registry and provenance tracking straightforward for collectors.

    Frequently asked questions

MS65 is the Gem Uncirculated grade on the 70-point Sheldon scale. A coin at this level shows no trace of wear, with only minimal, scattered contact marks and full, vibrant mint luster. It is a significant step above average uncirculated examples and highly sought after by Morgan Dollar collectors.
This coin was struck at the New Orleans Mint, identified by the O mint mark visible on the reverse below the eagle. The New Orleans Mint was active during a large portion of the Morgan Dollar series and is historically significant for its role in post-Civil War U.S. silver coinage.
Morgan Dollars are composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, the standard prescribed by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. Each coin weighs 26.73 grams and measures 38.1 mm in diameter, making them substantial, substantial silver pieces prized by both collectors and silver enthusiasts.
The coin is encapsulated in a PCGS tamper-evident sonically sealed slab, which protects the surfaces from environmental exposure and handling. The holder includes a barcode, holographic security label, and PCGS certification number 7822232 for easy registry lookup and provenance tracking.
