Description

The 1924-P 1924 $20 Gold Double Eagle PCGS MS63 is one of the most celebrated issues in all of American numismatics, certified at the choice uncirculated MS63 level by the Professional Coin Grading Service. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1924 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle carries 0. 9675 troy oz of gold and a $20 face value, making it both a substantial gold holding and a cornerstone collectible for any serious collection. The obverse bears Augustus Saint-Gaudens' masterwork design: a striding Lady Liberty holding a torch and olive branch, with the Capitol building in the background and 46 stars ringing the field. The date 1924 appears prominently at the lower right. The reverse presents a majestic eagle in flight, wings spread against radiant sunrays, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS arcing above and IN GOD WE TRUST inscribed below. The 1924 Philadelphia issue is the highest-mintage date in the entire Saint-Gaudens series, making MS63 examples reliably available to collectors yet no less desirable for their outstanding eye appeal and historic significance. This example is housed in a PCGS old green holder, a format prized by registry collectors and type coin enthusiasts alike.

Frequently asked questions

This coin is graded MS63 (Choice Uncirculated) by the Professional Coin Grading Service. MS63 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles display above-average luster and strike with only a few scattered contact marks, placing them solidly in the choice uncirculated tier and making them excellent type-coin representatives of the series.
The coin contains 0.9675 troy oz of gold. The $20 Double Eagle was the largest gold denomination struck for circulation in United States history, and the 1924 Philadelphia issue is the highest-mintage date in the entire Saint-Gaudens series, struck from 1907 through 1933.
The old green label holder is an earlier generation of PCGS slabs, recognized and prized by registry collectors and type-set builders. The coin remains fully encapsulated in the original tamper-evident case with its cert number 9177.63/4149011, which can be verified in the PCGS population registry.
The coin was designed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. The obverse shows a full-length Lady Liberty striding forward with a torch and olive branch. The reverse features a bold eagle in flight above radiant sunrays, widely regarded as the finest artistic design ever placed on a U.S. coin.
