$20 Gold Double Eagles

The $20 Gold Double Eagle is the largest denomination ever struck for circulation by the United States Mint, containing .9675 troy ounces of gold at .900 fineness. Double Eagles were produced continuously from 1850 through 1933, making them the backbone of American gold coinage for more than eight decades. Two major design types define the series: the Liberty Head (Coronet) Double Eagle, designed by James B. Longacre and minted from 1850 to 1907, and the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, widely regarded as one of the finest coin designs in American history, sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and issued from 1907 until the end of domestic gold coinage in 1933.

The Liberty Head type features a classic portrait of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a heraldic eagle reverse, with the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" added in 1866. The Saint-Gaudens design replaced it with a striding Liberty figure on the obverse and a soaring eagle on the reverse, drawing on a commission from President Theodore Roosevelt to beautify American coinage. Within the Saint-Gaudens series, collectors distinguish between the No Motto (1907–1908) and With Motto (1908–1933) subtypes, as well as early high-relief and flat-relief strikes.
