The 2008 American Silver Eagle Dollar is a 1 troy oz coin struck in 0. 999 fine silver by the United States Mint, graded Gem Uncirculated by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and sealed in NGC's tamper-evident slab under certification number 3255126-045. The American Silver Eagle series, launched in 1986, is the official silver bullion coin of the United States and among the most widely collected silver coins in the world. The obverse carries Adolph A. Weinman's beloved Walking Liberty design — originally created for the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar — depicting Lady Liberty striding confidently toward the sunrise, draped in the American flag, with an olive branch in hand. The reverse features John Mercanti's heraldic bald eagle with a shield on its breast, clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by thirteen stars and the inscriptions "United States of America" and "1 oz. Fine Silver — One Dollar. " The NGC Gem Uncirculated designation reflects exceptional strike quality and exceptional surface preservation, making this 2008 issue a strong centerpiece for a type set or a date-run collection of American Silver Eagles.
